Though the actual trek is only for eight days, the entire trip which includes the journey from Paro to Bumthang and back may take 17 days. This duration may be reduced to 15 days according to your convenience.
Day 01 Arrive at Paro
You will be received by a representative of Kibou Bhutan Tours and Treks at the airport from where you will be driven to your hotel. In the afternoon after a visit to the Rinpung Dzong (fortress/monastery) the rest of the day may be spent at leisure with a stroll through the town. End the day with a welcome dinner back at the hotel.
Day 02 Paro (Sightseeing)
Drive to the ruins of Drukgyel Dzong in the morning to take in the view of the valley and other sights along the way such as the famous Tiger’s Den Monastery perched precariously upon a cliff and other temples and monasteries. In the afternoon visit the 7th century Kyichu Lhakhang (temple) and the National Museum which is housed in an ancient watch tower then stroll through a typical Bhutanese village and visit a farmhouse to experience the life of the local farmer with butter tea and local snacks. Return to the hotel for the night.
Day 03 Paro – Thimphu
Drive to Thimphu in the morning; check in at the hotel and after lunch visit Zilukha Nunnery, the National Library, the Memorial Chorten and the Textile Museum. In the evening take a leisurely stroll through the town.
Day 04 Thimphu – Trongsa
This is a 6 to 7 hour drive with lots of stops along the way. Once we arrive at Trongsa and have checked in at the hotel, we may visit the Trongsa Dzong, a 17th century fortress that now serves as a monastery as well as the local administration office. This is of historical significance as it is the seat of the Wangchuck dynasty.
Day 05 Trongsa – Bumthang
The drive to Bumthang is about 3 hours. Once we arrive at Bumthang and have checked in, we may visit some of the ancient temples and monasteries in the valley. Spend the evening at leisure in preparation for tomorrows trek
Day 06. Bumthang – Gorsum: Distance 18 kms. Alt. 3120m.
After an early breakfast we drive to the trek starting point. Today’s trek which is for about 6 to 7 hours, at an altitude of 3120m is along the Chamkhar River till we arrive at Gorsum where we camp for the night.
Day 07. Gorsum – Lungsum: Distance 12 kms. Alt. 3160m
Today we trek for about 5 hours at an altitude of 3160 m. The trail takes us through beautiful spruce, hemlock, cypress, juniper and maple forests. The muddy trail ascends gradually to the camp site at Lungsum we where halt for the night.
Day 08. Lungsum – Tsochenchen: Distance 15 kms. Alt. 3300m
Today’s trek is similar to yesterday’s initially as we trek through beautiful forests but then the vegetation begins changing gradually as we go higher until after about 6 to 7 hours, we arrive at the camp site which is above the tree line.
Day 09. Tsochenchen – Dur Tsachu: Distance 17 kms. Alt. 3400m.
On the fourth day, the trail ascends to Julila pass which is at an altitude of 4700m. On a clear day the view of the surrounding mountains is simply breathtaking. Then we descend to the camp site at Dur Hot spring. The trek is for about 7 hours and we may see flocks of blue sheep and the occasional musk deer along the way.
Day 10. Dur Tsachu – Halt (Tsachu Hot Spring)
After a leisurely breakfast we can relax in the Hot spring and explore the area nearby.
Day 11. Dur Tsachu – Tsochenchen: Distance – 17 Kms.
We now make our way back to Bumthang and today we trek for about seven hours. The trail from Dur Tsachu ascends all the way up till the pass at Julila then descends to the camp site at Tsochenchen.
Day 12. Tsochenchen – Gorsum: Distance – 27 Kms. About 9 hours. (Alt.3120m).
Today we trek in a day the distance we took two days to cover earlier as we don’t stop at the camp site at Lungsum since the trail is all the way downhill now. After about nine hours we arrive at the camp site at Gorsum where we halt for the night.
Day 13. Gorsum – Bumthang:
The final leg of the trek which is for about 6 hours takes us back to the road head and we drive back to the hotel
Day 14 Bumthang
Spend the day at leisure, visiting ancient temples and monasteries and strolling through town.
Day 15 Bumthang – Wangdi
The next morning, we begin our journey to Wangdi past Trongsa where we stopped for the night on the way to Bumthang.
Day 16 Wangdi – Paro
After an early breakfast we begin our journey to Paro with a lunch stop at Thimphu. We could stop for a visit to the Wangdi Dzong along the way. We halt for the night at Paro
Day 17 Paro – Departure
Drive to the Paro international airport for your onward journey home
